RG GREEN SYSTEM has achieved the prestigious FM APPROVAL for its W-FOG UAP Water Mist System for the protection of Data Centers (DC), covering both open room environments and raised floor spaces, through either local application or area coverage design.
This certification enables the protection of data rooms/areas with forced ventilation and the presence of electrical cables—both in the ambient space and under raised floors—using the W-FOG UAP water mist system from RG GREEN SYSTEM.
This approval adds to the existing FM certifications for the W-FOG UAP system, making it suitable for protecting not only data rooms but also all other HC-1 category risks present in the same building. The system offers great versatility, allowing protection of various risks using a single pump group, by installing the most suitable nozzle for each application.
The system’s performance is backed by full-scale fire tests simulating real fire scenarios in rooms with server cabinets, data cables, and forced ventilation—both in the ambient room and beneath raised floors—proving its extinguishing capability under all possible real fire conditions.
The FM Approved W-FOG UAP system is composed of high-quality, certified components: water storage tanks, filtration systems, high-pressure pump units with versatile flow rates, sectional valves, pre-action valves, and fine water mist discharge nozzles specifically designed for protecting both Data Center zones and other HC-1 risk applications. This results in high system performance and a broad range of installation options for seamless integration into protected facilities.
FM Approved Nozzles for Data Center Protection
For Raised Floor (Above)
- MM-P51-57-11: pendent nozzle, activation temperature 57°C, suitable for any area above raised floors with no coverage limitations, up to 5.00 m ceiling height.
- MM-P51-68-11: pendent nozzle, activation temperature 68°C, suitable for any area above raised floors with no coverage limitations, up to 5.00 m ceiling height.
For Raised Floor (Below)
- MM-P51-57-11: pendent nozzle, for local application design along the cable trays, for single-level cable trays under raised floors.
- MM-P52-57-11: pendent nozzle, for area coverage design, protecting raised floors with single-level cable trays.
- MM-P53-57-11: pendent nozzle, for area coverage design, protecting raised floors with double-level cable trays.
SYSTEM OPERATION
The W-FOG UAP high-pressure water mist system outperforms conventional sprinklers and low-pressure mist systems. The higher discharge pressure produces significantly smaller water droplets, which increases the extinguishing efficiency and minimizes the risk of damage to electronic equipment.
Safety in environments with delicate electrical equipment is enhanced by the system’s FM Approved pre-action valves, which ensure that the pipe network to the nozzles is pressurized with supervisory air, not water.
- The system is activated via an electronic detection system, which triggers the pre-action valve to open.
- In case of an accidental pipe leak, only air would be released, causing a depressurization alarm—allowing time for inspection and correction.
- If a true fire alarm is detected, the pre-action valve opens, triggering the high-pressure water mist pump and filling the network with water.
- However, water will only discharge if a nozzle activates due to heat, preventing false discharges in the event of a detection-only alarm.
PERFORMANCE FEATURES
The W-FOG UAP system offers the following performance characteristics for Data Center protection:
- High fire suppression efficiency due to fine droplet size at high pressure.
- Safe against false alarms and water leakage through optional pre-action configurations.
- Full-scale fire test validation under FM supervision.
- Clean and environmentally friendly, residue-free and safe for public spaces.
- Safe for sensitive equipment, ideal for Data Center environments.
- Certified for both room and raised floor protection, including other HC-1 categorized risks.
- Capable of area coverage design for raised floors with single or double cable trays.
- Allows local application design for single-tray installations under raised floors.
- Approved for use under maximum air speeds allowed by FM, enabling protection without disabling server HVAC systems.
- Highly reliable components, tested for pressure, corrosion, and durability under FM standards.
ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER SYSTEMS
The W-FOG UAP water mist system offers several advantages over conventional sprinklers, low-pressure mist systems, and gas extinguishing systems:
- No need for room sealing, unlike gas suppression systems.
- Minimized water damage, as it uses much less water than traditional systems.
- Smaller pipe diameters, easier to integrate into building infrastructure.
- Smaller water storage requirements, allowing more flexibility in tank placement.
- Greater coverage per nozzle, reducing the number of nozzles and piping required.
- Low-cost refill, using potable water versus expensive gases.
- Simple and fast installation, thanks to flare fitting systems that reduce labor time and cost.
COMPARISON WITH CONVENTIONAL SPRINKLERS
- W-FOG UAP water droplets are much smaller and evaporate faster, reducing fire temperatures and minimizing water damage.
- W-FOG UAP nozzles have greater coverage, reducing system complexity and cost by more than 50%.
- Water discharge density is just 0.35 lpm/m³, while traditional sprinklers can discharge up to 8 times more.
- Traditional sprinkler systems with air-pressurized carbon steel pipes face corrosion issues, sometimes addressed by expensive nitrogen generators.
- W-FOG UAP uses small-diameter stainless steel piping, easily pressurized with compact air compressors without corrosion risks.
APPLICATIONS
The FM APPROVAL for the W-FOG UAP system for Data Centers, in addition to its existing approval for all HC-1 risks, includes protection of the following areas as defined in FM Data Sheet 4-2 and FM Data Sheet 5-32:
- Control rooms
- Data centers
- Equipment processing rooms/hallways
- Diagnostic equipment rooms
- Process control rooms
- Telecommunications rooms
